As we approach Thanksgiving I encourage us all to take some intentional time to count our blessings and give thanks to God. In the words of an old gospel song, "Count your blessings name them one by one. Count your blessings see what God has done. .....". What a great idea! I suggest you take a pen or a keypad and list the many blessings in your life. You will be astonished by the results. Go ahead, carve out a block of time and start listing the long list of blessings, name them one by one. You may choose to start listing the blessings randomly. Others may choose a more guided approach. If so, below is a suggested partial list of categories.
The Psalmist proclaims: "Let us come before the Lord with thanksgiving" (Psalm 95:2a). Remember, this listing and recounting of blessings is not just for us, it is also to be a blessing unto God, for it blesses and pleases God when we acknowledge Him and thank Him for all He has done. So, when you make your list be certain to thank and praise God for all His wonderful gifts recounted on your list.
A suggested guided blessings list:
For the blessings of shelter, clothing, food, etc.
For the blessings of family and relationships - list by name
For the blessings of nature and animals - make a list of specifics
For the blessings of forgiveness when I fail.
For the blessing of sleep and rest when tired.
For the blessings of spiritual gifts, talents and skills from God. List these in your life.
For the blessings of opportunities and options.
For the God-given spiritual gifts including: joy, peace, mercy, grace, and faith.
For the blessings of recreation and renewal.
For sabbath time.
Other blessings?
A THANKSGIVING PRAYER: We thank you, God, for blessings - The big ones and the small. Your tender love and mercy that guards and keeps us all. The fresh awaking of joy that comes with morning light, sunlit hours to fill the day and restful sleep at night. The hope, the beauty and the love that brightens each day's living; we praise you, and our hearts are filled with joy, and with thanksgiving. The fulfillment that's found in a job well done, the love of those who care, the peace of mind and serenity that comes with quiet prayer. In Christ name we thank you, Amen.
