Tough Issues

Tough Issues #3: Homosexuality (2009-08-16)

Some guidelines for a Christian discussion of tough issues and other topics:

  1. Remember, the preacher/speaker represents a Christian interpretation of the issue, not THE Christian interpretation.  Committed Christians have differing and sometimes opposing convictions on tough issues and topics.  Only God, who is truth, possesses the total truth and picture.  No one person, group, or denomination has a monopoly on the truth.
  2. Maintain an open mind when discussing tough issues.  Recall that a closed mind is like a closed parachute -- which can certainly lead to undesirable consequences.
  3. Agree to disagree agreeably.  Life is too short and relationships too valuable to win the battle and lose the war.
  4. Keep the main thing the main thing.  Persons and Christian persons, disagree on many issues.  On this Christians affirm and believe:  Jesus Christ is Savior and Lord.  As we may differ and disagree on some issues may it never break our unity in Christ.

I. Courtesy and Kindness

Verse 14: "If people persecute you because you are a Christian, don't curse them; pray that God will bless them."

II. Empathy

Verse 15:"When others are happy, be happy with them. If they are sad, share their sorrow."

III. Harmony

Verses 16a & 18:"Live in harmony with each other." "Do your part to live in peace with everyone, as much as possible."

IV. Humility

Verses 16b,c:"...Don't try to act important, but enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don't think you know it all."

V. Mercy

Verses 19-21:"Dear friends, never avenge yourselves. Leave that to God. For it is written, 'I will take vengeance; I will repay those who deserve it,' says the Lord. Instead, do what the Scriptures say: 'If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink, and they will be ashamed of what they have done to you.' Don't let evil get the best of you, but conquer evil by doing good."

Emotionally Healthy Spirituality

A Rule of Life (2012-11-04)

A rule of life is the means by which a Christian believer establishes an intentional pattern of growing as a follower of Jesus Christ. Your rule is a unique discipline taken on voluntarily to give order, support, and direction to your life; and a means of rooting your life more deeply in Christ.

Emotionally Healthy Spirituality: A Rule of Life

Developing Your Own Rule of Life

The following outline is provided to help us each develop our own personal Rule of Life. Please remember: Your Rule of Life is meant to be: unique; flexible; internally, not externally, motivated; and, above all else, designed to enable and encourage you to grow closer to Jesus Christ – the Lover of your soul!

Rule of Life Outline of Suggestions (Suggestion: Choose a couple areas to begin working on your personal Rule of Life with God’s help and grace):

I. WORSHIP "Continue.in the breaking of bread and prayers."

a. Christian Spiritual Disciplines: i.e. Holy Communion; Scripture Readings; Prayer; Meditation; Sabbath Time; etc.

b. Daily Office (Stopping several times during the day to spend intentional silent and reflection time with God)

c. Other: Fasting, retreats, use of a spiritual guide, etc.

II. STUDY "…Continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship."

a. Scriptures (Study not only for information, but especially for formation – God’s Word forming and shaping us more and more into the image of Christ).

b. Christian doctrine, church history, the writings of the Christian saints.

c. Research and reflection upon your family of origin, learning the personality, "rules," and patterns of your family in three to five generations.

III. CHRISTIAN ACTION "They shared with great joy and generosity while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their group…"

(Representing Christ and his church in the world: What are your responsibilities and opportunities for service in Christ’s name?):

a. Family and Friends:

b. Community/ Neighborhood/ As a citizen:

c. Work:

d. Church:

e. Self-care (Appropriate action as concerns caring for your own needs; management of time and responsibilities):

f. Giving (Christian stewardship in all areas: Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service, and Witness):
